Getting started

What is Tir Anferth?

Tir Anferth is a Wurm Unlimited community server featuring the biggest and harshest landscapes ever created for the game. It is built around four kingdoms — Albion, Northumbria, Mercia, and Wessex — each with its own lore, character, and way of life. Every player begins in Albion, the neutral crown, and is free to stay or pledge to one of the three kingdoms.

How do I join the server?

See the How to Join page for step-by-step instructions. You will need Wurm Unlimited in your Steam library. Open Multiplayer, choose the Internet list, and look for Tir Anferth while the world is up.

Do I need anything besides Wurm Unlimited?

No. You need Wurm Unlimited on Steam and nothing else: there is no join password and no address to type. If you want them, there is also a free pack of client mods (live map, compass, skill tracker and more) with a one-click installer, Windows only.

Is there a tutorial?

There is no tutorial island. Every character wakes in the Throne Room of Albion, the Herald speaks to you, and he sends you to Steward Wystan at the Cloth Hall a few minutes away. The New Player Guide walks through your first hour step by step.

Why does my character start with nothing?

On purpose. Every character arrives with an empty pack, every skill at 1 and every characteristic at 5. During the first-hour tasks you are lent a hatchet and a pickaxe, and the Herald tells you to keep them. The numbers are on Server Info.

Do I get starter tools?

No. Under Hard Mode, new players arrive with no starter kit. You'll need to forage, craft, and work the land from nothing — the way the first settlers did when they crossed the grey sea. The Herald mission chain and Albion's furnished public buildings are designed to make the first hour legible.

Which kingdom should I choose?

That's entirely up to you. You start as a subject of the Crown in Albion and can take your time deciding. Each kingdom has its own character:

  • Albion — Neutral, welcoming, enduring. The crown where everyone begins.
  • Northumbria — Stern, industrious, unyielding. Iron and stone in the northern hills.
  • Mercia — Shrewd, industrious, pragmatic. Trade and clay on the harbour coast.
  • Wessex — Patient, grounded, watchful. Deep timber and earned trust.

Read the full descriptions on The Realms page.

Can I change kingdom later?

Your first choice is a single offer from the Herald. A way to change kingdom later is planned, and it will be deliberately hard: think rare materials and a specific mission, not a menu option.

Playing

Is it PVE or PVP?

Both, by zone. Albion and the starter towns are safe: no PvP there. It's where all players begin and where the neutral crown holds court. The kingdom lands (Northumbria, Mercia, Wessex) are PvP, and each kingdom's Steward can tell you the local conventions.

What are the server rates?

The Hard Mode settings are: skill gain 0.2×, action speed 1.2×, characteristics 5, body control 5, mind logic 5, fighting 1, all other skills 1, no starter tools, combat rating mod 1.0. This puts Tir Anferth at the joint-slowest skill gain of any known WU server, paired with action speed 20% faster than Wurm Online. See Server Info for the full settings table.

What does "Hard Mode" actually feel like in practice?

The first week is: carry one log at a time (≈35 kg carry capacity, one log is 24 kg), walk everywhere (no riding until body control 21), queue one or two actions at a time (mind logic 5), and gain skills at a fifth of Wurm Online's rate, with actions 20% quicker to keep your hands busy. Time-to-skill-20 is roughly 4× Wurm Online's. The closest precedent is Wilderness of Rin (0.2×/1.5×, no starter kit), which has been running since 2021.

What makes Tir Anferth different from other WU servers?

Two things: scale and tuning. Tir Anferth runs the biggest map ever created for Wurm Unlimited, and its Hard Mode settings (skill 0.2×, action speed 1.2×, characteristics at 5, no starter tools, CR 1.0) make it one of the hardest servers in existence. See the How We Compare page for a full comparison against 46 other servers.

How do I earn iron?

Being online pays: 10 iron and 1 karma every 10 minutes, which is 60 iron an hour. A few hours a day covers a small deed’s upkeep several times over. Missions from the Herald and the Stewards earn you your first tools.

Can I run more than one character at once?

Yes. One Steam account may run several clients at the same time. Alts must not be used to inflate the economy or gain an unfair edge.

Where do I mine in Albion?

The Albion Mine Head is an open-air rock quarry just outside the Eastgate, on the east slope of the plateau. The floor is flat rock and there is a 12 m rock wall at the back; you tunnel in yourself from the faces. The sign there reads “Open to Sky, Watched by the Crown. Mind the Drop.”

How do I find my way around Albion?

Albion’s roads and squares carry signposts to the places you will want, and the streets are lit at night. For the whole land there is the live map, and fenced waystations stand along the roads of the three kingdoms as safe places to rest on a long walk.

Can I use macros, bots or helper tools?

Macros and helper tools are welcome while you are at the keyboard. What is not allowed is leaving a character working with nobody there. The Law of Honest Hands on the Rules page explains how the Watchman checks, and how to register a helper with the Herald if you want one to work while you are away.

What is the Vigil?

The Vigil is the Watchman's question. If you work at one task for a long stretch, he may ask you something simple in a small window. Click the answer within five minutes and carry on. A correct answer strikes one mark off your list. Type /vigil in game to see where you stand.

What happens if I miss a Vigil?

You get a strike. The first strike is a warning and costs nothing. From the second, your skills come slower with each strike (roughly a third less each time) and the Vigils come more often. Answer the next Vigil and one strike comes off.

Why was I put in the Stocks?

The Stocks are where the seventh strike ends up: a long run of missed Vigils, without enough answered ones in between to strike the marks off. You are held for ten minutes, then asked a Vigil. Answer it and you are sent back to where you stood. Miss it and you stay another ten minutes. The Stocks stay with you through a log out or a server restart. If you think it was a mistake, ask a Steward in game or in the help channel. The Vigil exists to keep the realm honest against unattended automation; a human who answers is never slowed for long.

Can I play AFK?

Not on the open road. If nobody is there to answer, the Vigil goes unanswered and the strikes pile up. If you want a helper to keep working while you are away, register it with the Herald: Registered Automata work in the Workyard, gain skill more slowly, and are not asked the Vigil there.

What is Hollow?

After the Stocks you are Hollow for an hour: your skills come slowly. It is a cooling-off, not a mark against you. When the hour ends your strikes are cleared.

What is Outlaw?

If you keep ending up in the Stocks, the next time you are named Outlaw instead. For a day your skills come slowly, and the Stewards look at the case. It is meant for people who leave characters working unattended, not for someone who dozed off once. It exists to keep the realm honest against unattended automation; a human who answers is never slowed for long. If it misfires on you, tell a Steward.

Can fields be sown on a slope?

Yes. Fields can now be sown, tended and harvested on any slope. No flat ground needed. Dig in wherever the hill lets you.

What is the Speaking Stone?

The Speaking Stone, also called the Moot, is how the community puts suggestions to the realm. Read about it on The Stone page.

How do I link my character to Discord for the Market?

In the game type /market link in chat and note the six-digit code. Then send /link followed by the code to the Mehmed II bot on Discord. The code lasts 10 minutes and works once; ask for a new one if it runs out. Linking proves the character and the Discord account are the same person. Selling is not open yet, so linking now just gets you ready.

Who are the people walking around Albion and the roads?

Albion has non-player citizens going about their day, travellers walk the roads, and a few dwellers keep to the old ruins. They are there to make the land feel lived in. Some tell you a line or two when you stop. For missions, find the Herald or a Steward.

Is there a wait between prayers?

No. The usual 20 minute gap between prayers is removed. The limit of five prayers per day phase stays.

Survival and combat

Can hunger or thirst kill me?

You get hungry and thirsty more slowly than in vanilla Wurm, and new characters more slowly still. Starving will not kill you outright, and drinking untreated water will not make you ill. Heat and cold do matter: see the Warmth guide.

Is the weather dangerous?

It can be. While your character still has Wurm’s newbie protection the weather cannot hurt you; after that you should dress for it. Your body warmth is a number from 0 to 250 and you can check it any time with /mytemp. The Warmth guide explains the bands and what warms you.

How do I know how long a fire will last?

Examine the fire, forge or oven: it tells you how long it has left to burn. The Fire guide covers keeping one going and how fires help your warmth.

How do I read my health and stamina in a fight?

Health is shown in plain words (unhurt, scratched, bruised, badly hurt, near death) and so is stamina. The Combat guide lists them, and the free Combat Window in the client mods pack shows them in a pop-up.

Deeds and money

What does it cost to found a deed?

Founding costs 40 iron per deed tile and 20 iron per perimeter tile beyond the free ring (every new deed starts with a free 20-tile perimeter on each side), plus 2,000 iron paid into the deed’s upkeep fund. A 15x15 deed is 9,000 iron plus the 2,000 fund. Upkeep is 5 iron per tile plus 1 iron per paid perimeter tile, with a minimum of 2,500 iron a month, and it starts after a 60-day grace period. Guards cost 10,000 iron to hire and 1,000 iron a month each. 100 iron makes 1 copper and 100 copper makes 1 silver.

Is there a limit on how many deeds I can have?

No. Upkeep is the only limit on how many deeds you hold and how big they are. Prices are under Deeds, upkeep and income on Server Info.

What happens if I cannot pay deed upkeep?

Upkeep is drawn from the deed’s fund after a 60-day grace period, and you are warned before a deed with an empty fund is disbanded. Keep the fund topped up; the prices are on Server Info.

What is the Alms Box?

The Alms Box lets any player give a little bank coin to keep the hearth of a deed burning, with their name or without. Find one on a deed token, and look for the Give alms choices.

Are there limits on giving alms?

Yes. Every giver has a daily limit, and every deed can only take so much in a day, so no single hand can drain a bank or flood a fund. Alms are gifts, freely given and never refunded, and the Alms Box takes coin from your bank only.

Client mods

What are the client mods?

A free pack of quality-of-life additions to the Wurm Unlimited client: a live map, compass, tool belt, skill tracker, richer tooltips, a container gauge, a combat window and more. They change what your own game shows you and do not play for you. Details and the download are on the Client Mods page.

Which folder does the installer want?

The WurmLauncher folder. In Steam, right-click Wurm Unlimited, choose Manage, then Browse local files, open the WurmLauncher folder and copy its address from the title bar.

Do the client mods work on Mac or Linux?

Not yet. The installer is Windows only for now.

How do I remove the client mods?

Close Wurm, then double-click Uninstall-TirAnferthMods.bat from the folder you unzipped. The installer backs up anything it replaces, and the log is at %APPDATA%\TirAnferthMods\install.log if something goes wrong.

The server

Is there a password, and will the server restart without warning?

There is no join password; you need Wurm Unlimited on Steam and you find Tir Anferth in the launcher’s Internet list. Planned restarts are announced in game, with warnings of up to five minutes, followed by the server’s own 30-second countdown.

Is there a Discord?

A Discord server and relay bot are being set up. Check the Community page for the invite link when it's ready.

Can I see a live map of the server?

Yes — a live map is available at map.tiranferth.world. You can also check server status at the Server Info page.

What does the Health card on Server Info mean?

It shows how the game server is doing right now. Tick health reads Healthy while the world keeps time, and Busy or Strained when it is running behind and you may feel lag. Capacity says how much room is left, and the lag events line counts the pauses in the last 24 hours. See Server Info.

Is my progress backed up?

Yes. The game databases are backed up automatically every night.

The server went down. What happened?

Planned restarts are announced in game first. If the server stops unexpectedly, a watchdog notices and starts it again, and the Health card on Server Info shows whether it is up.

Where can I report a bug or ask for help?

Ask a Steward in game. Ideas and suggestions go to The Speaking Stone, and the Community page will carry the Discord invite as soon as it is open.

Not here?

Ask a Steward in game, or put the idea to The Speaking Stone. Questions that keep coming up are added to this page.
