Combat
How to read a fight: your health and stamina, your wounds, and what the words mean.
New Player Guide · Warmth · Fire · Combat · FAQ
Health in words
Health is shown in five bands, from best to worst: unhurt, scratched, bruised, badly hurt and near death. Other players and creatures show only the band word, for example “Wild boar – bruised”. Your own health also has a last label, dying, for the final few points.
Stamina
Your own stamina has five labels: fresh, warmed up, tiring, winded and spent. A fight takes breath as well as strength. When you are winded your blows slow down, and when you are spent you should rest before the next fight.
Wounds
Wounds are described from the lightest: a graze, a cut, a deep cut and a grave wound, with the body part, and “bleeding” added when it bleeds. Type /mywounds to see them all. Bandage the worst wounds first, and never ignore one that is infected.
The fight log
The Combat Window lists the last few hits in plain words: who hit whom and for how much, misses, dodges and parries, and sums up a finished fight as won, fled or fallen with the damage dealt and taken.
The Combat Window
The free Combat Window in the client mods pack shows your health, your target, the last hits and your wounds in one pop-up, using the words on this page. It is part of the pack, so install that first.
Staying alive
- Watch the band words, not just the numbers. Back away at badly hurt; at near death withdraw or heal now.
- Rest when winded. A spent fighter loses fights it should win.
- Keep warm. Cold weakens a long expedition; see the Warmth guide.
Albion and the starter towns are safe from PvP; the kingdom lands are not.
