New Player Guide

There is no tutorial island. There is a Herald, a road, and a decision. This page covers your first hour and what to know before your first week.

Getting in

You need Wurm Unlimited on Steam. Start it, choose Multiplayer, open the Internet list and pick Tir Anferth. There is no password and no address to type; the world shows in the list whenever it is up. The steps are on Server Info.

What you start with

Nothing, on purpose. Every character wakes in the Throne Room of Albion with an empty pack, every skill at 1 and every characteristic at 5. Skills come at a fifth of Wurm Online’s pace, but your actions run 20 percent quicker, so there is always something to do with your hands. The numbers are on Server Info.

Your first hour

  1. Speak to the Herald. He is in the Throne Room and opens a window by himself once your character is made. He tells you the empty pack is deliberate and sends you to Steward Wystan at the Cloth Hall on Crown Square, a few minutes on foot.
  2. Sticks for the Hearth. Wystan wants five branches from around the Cloth Hall. Pick them up from the ground or forage under the trees. He lends you a hatchet.
  3. Walk the Royal Way. See Crown Square, then stand at the north door of the Fish Market on the harbour. It takes about ten minutes on foot and there is no danger on the way.
  4. Logs for the Hall. Fell a tree, cut logs and bring three to Wystan. Logs only: branches and kindling do not count. A whole log is heavy (about 24 kg), so cut it down to a smaller log you can carry. The Mine House lends you a pickaxe.
  5. Read the four banners. They hang on the south side of the Throne Room: Albion, Northumbria, Wessex and Mercia. Read each one, then speak to the Herald again. He tells you to keep the hatchet and the pickaxe.
  6. Choose your kingdom, once. Stay in Albion or pledge to Northumbria, Mercia or Wessex. It is a single offer: closing the Herald’s window means you stay under Albion, and changing your mind later is meant to be hard. The four lands are described on The Realms.

Staying fed and watered

You get hungry and thirsty more slowly than in vanilla Wurm, and new characters more slowly still. Starving will not kill you outright, and drinking untreated water will not make you ill. Heat and cold do matter: while your character still has Wurm’s newbie protection the weather cannot hurt you, and after that you should dress for it.

Earning iron

Being online pays 10 iron and 1 karma every 10 minutes, which is 60 iron an hour. Creatures pay a bounty in iron when you kill them. Mail is free to send. Money counts in iron, copper, silver and gold: 100 iron makes 1 copper, 100 copper 1 silver and 100 silver 1 gold.

Settling down

Anyone may found a deed. There is no limit on how many you hold or how big they are; upkeep is the only limit. Every new deed starts with a free 20-tile perimeter, and a 15x15 deed costs 9,000 iron plus a 2,000 iron upkeep fund. The full price list is under Deeds, upkeep and income on Server Info.

Getting around

Fenced waystations stand along the roads of the three kingdoms, and they are safe places to rest on a long walk. The live map shows the whole land. Albion and the starter towns are safe from PvP; the kingdom lands are not.

More than one character

You may run several clients at once, on the same Steam account. Do not use them to inflate the economy or gain an unfair edge.

Survival guides

Three short pages for when the land turns hard: Warmth (the cold and how to beat it), Fire (reading and keeping a fire) and Combat (reading a fight).

Halloween event

Until 7 November, Steward Ingram at the Chapel of the Crown in Albion has gentle errands with Halloween keepsakes as rewards. Where to find him and what he asks for.

When you are stuck

Read the Rules and the FAQ, and ask a Steward in game. Macros and helper tools are welcome while you are at the keyboard; the Law of Honest Hands on the Rules page explains the one thing that is not allowed.
